The cluster galaxy luminosity function at z = 0 . 3 : a recent origin for the faint - end upturn ?

چکیده

We derive deep luminosity functions (to Mz = −15) for galaxies in Abell 1835 (z = 0.25) and AC 114 (z = 0.31) and compare these with the local z luminosity function for 69 clusters. The data show that the faint-end upturn, the excess of galaxies above a single Schechter function at Mz < −17, does not exist in the higher redshift clusters. This suggests that the faint-end upturn galaxies have been created recently, by infall into clusters of star-forming field populations or via tidal disruption of brighter objects.

RASS - SDSS Galaxy Clusters Survey . II . A unified picture of the Cluster Luminosity Function

We constructed the composite luminosity function (LF) of clusters of galaxies in the five SDSS photometric bands u,g,r,i and z from the RASS-SDSS galaxy cluster catalog. Background and foreground galaxies are subtracted using both a local and a global background correction to take in account the presence of large scale structures and variations from field to field, respectively. The composite L...

The Evolution of the Luminosity Function in Deep Fields: a Comparison with Cdm Models

The galaxy Luminosity Function (LF) has been estimated in the rest frame B luminosity at 0 < z < 1.25 and at 1700 Å for 2.5 < z < 4.5 from deep multicolor surveys in the HDF-N, HDF-S, NTT-DF. The results have been compared with a recent version of galaxy formation models in the framework of hierarchical clustering in a flat Cold Dark Matter Universe with cosmological constant. The results show ...

The faint-end of the galaxy luminosity function in groups

We compute the galaxy luminosity function in spectroscopically selected nearby groups and clusters. Our sample comprises 728 systems extracted from the third release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in the redshift range 0.03 < z < 0.06 with virial mass range 1011 M⊙ < Mvir < 2 × 1014 M⊙. In order to compute the galaxy luminosity function, we apply a statistical background subtraction method fol...

Is the Luminosity Distribution of Eld Galaxies Really at ?

Recent observations of the galaxy population within rich clusters have found a characteristic luminosity distribution described by a at (= 1:0) Schechter function which exhibits an upturn at faint absolute magnitudes (M B 18). Here we discuss whether such a form for the eld luminosity distribution is ruled out by local and/or faint magnitude limited redshift surveys (MLRS). Our conclusions are ...

Near-infrared Properties of Moderate-redshift Galaxy Clusters: Luminosity Functions and Density Profiles

We present K-band imaging for 15 of the Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology (CNOC1) clusters. The extensive spectroscopic dataset available for these clusters allows us to determine the cluster K-band luminosity function and density profile without the need for statistical background subtraction. The luminosity density and number density profiles can be described by NFW models with con...
